Starship Home is a psychedelic sci-fi adventure game made for mixed reality that I had the great pleasure of working on with Creature. I have previous experience creating artwork for virtual reality games, but this was my first mixed reality game.
The game has a very distinctive goopy cozy sci-fi art style inspired by the Y2K aesthetic, using a strong shape language to unify the visual elements of the game into a cohesive whole. Our art director Ashley Pinnick created a fantastic style guide and the first 3D assets, which were inspiring resources for me when making these props for the game.
The art team was quite small, my responsibility was as the senior 3D artist. I came up with the concepts for the props and environments shown below in addition to their modelling and texturing. Tech art is by Trev Clift, VFX by Jamie Degen, icons by Jesse Tise, and animation by Jack Erskine.
The whole Creature team were one of the friendliest and fun groups I've had the pleasure to work with.
The planet surfaces in the game are something the player experiences through the helm window, they are a coloured hologram representation of the planet that are scanned to find points of interest. The hangar environment is the exterior environment (again seen through the windows) at the start of the game.
This is the launch trailer of the game, where you can see how the mixed reality props are placed in an example room.
There were many interesting design challenges working in Mixed Reality. We tried to design the game to work in as many varied spaces as possible so that anyone can turn their particular room into a starship. I think we achieved a great illusion of additional depth by having our viewport and windows curve outwardly, and the airlock and storage add external spaces that are interacted with by pulling them into the room.
